Important: POST Waiver Required

Out-of-State Police Officers must complete the POST Basic Course Waiver process BEFORE applying to BHPD. If you haven't received the POST Basic Course waiver, you will be considered an entry-level officer even though you were an officer with another agency out of state.

POST Basic Course Waiver Process

Follow these four steps to complete your POST Basic Course Waiver and become eligible to apply as a lateral officer with BHPD.

01

Application & Self-Assessment

Start Here

Complete the POST Regular Basic Course Waiver Application (Form 2-267) and assess whether your prior training meets California's requirements.

Checklist:

  • Completion of a 200-hour general law enforcement basic training (or equivalent)
  • A total of at least 664 hours of general law enforcement training (including basic course)
  • Completion of the legislatively mandated training topics in the California basic curriculum
  • At least one year of full-time general law enforcement experience (after finishing basic training)
02

POST Training Evaluation

Review Phase

POST reviews the documentation you submit, such as training records, transcripts, certificates, and experience, to determine whether your training and experience meet minimum standards.

📋
What to Submit:
  • Training records and transcripts
  • Certificates of completion
  • Employment verification
  • Any additional supporting documentation
⏱️
Processing Time:
  • POST will notify you whether your training/experience meets minimum standards. Processing times vary, so submit early.
03

Waiver Assessment

Testing Phase

If your documentation passes POST review, you must complete either a Requalification Course or testing to prove equivalency.

Option A: Requalification Course

A 160-hour minimum POST-certified course used for both waiver assessment and requalification of officers.

Learn More About Requalification Course

Option B: Testing Only

Under certain criteria (per Commission Regulation 1005(a)(1)(C)(2)), you may be eligible for written and skills testing instead of the full course.

04

Waiver Issuance

Final Step

Upon successful completion of the assessment, POST issues a waiver letter that waives the requirement to attend a full California Basic Course.
