POST Basic Course Waiver Process
Follow these four steps to complete your POST Basic Course Waiver and become eligible to apply as a lateral officer with BHPD.
Application & Self-Assessment
Start HereComplete the POST Regular Basic Course Waiver Application (Form 2-267) and assess whether your prior training meets California's requirements.
Checklist:
- Completion of a 200-hour general law enforcement basic training (or equivalent)
- A total of at least 664 hours of general law enforcement training (including basic course)
- Completion of the legislatively mandated training topics in the California basic curriculum
- At least one year of full-time general law enforcement experience (after finishing basic training)
POST Training Evaluation
Review PhasePOST reviews the documentation you submit, such as training records, transcripts, certificates, and experience, to determine whether your training and experience meet minimum standards.

- POST will notify you whether your training/experience meets minimum standards. Processing times vary, so submit early.
Waiver Assessment
Testing PhaseIf your documentation passes POST review, you must complete either a Requalification Course or testing to prove equivalency.
Waiver Issuance
Final StepUpon successful completion of the assessment, POST issues a waiver letter that waives the requirement to attend a full California Basic Course.
The POST Basic Course Waiver is valid for three years from the date of issuance.
Once you receive your waiver letter, you're ready to apply to BHPD as a lateral officer!

Minimum one year of full-time general law enforcement experience after basic training
Training Hours
At least 664 hours of general law enforcement training (including 200-hour basic course)

Track 1
At least 36 semester (54 quarter) units from an accredited college. Diploma or transcripts required at application
Education
Track 2
Minimum four years of active U.S. military service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, Coast Guard) with an Honorable Discharge. Form DD-214 required at application
Age
At least 21 years old at time of appointment
Citizenship
Must be a citizen of the United States of America, or a lawful permanent resident, at the time of application
Driver's License
Possession of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record
Background Investigation
Be of good moral character and pass the following examinations:
- Polygraph
- Psychological
- Medical
